The Country Trust is facing unprecedented demand from schools for life-enhancing opportunities for children to experience farming and the countryside, to learn how to grow and cook, to get their hands in the soil, for support for teachers to bring learning to life. We have set an urgent and ambitious target to bring transformative experiences to 120,000 children each year by 2027 and funding is our only limiting factor.
"I saw actual live cows for the first time and I rode a tractor for the first time! I will never forget seeing a barn owl, as it is very rare." ~ Pupil
Cooking and eating nutritious food and spending time in the countryside are things we may take for granted, but in the UK approximately 12% of children go over a year without visiting a natural environment such as a forest or park, and in 2022 / 2023, 17% of all children were living in ‘food insecure’ households.
The Country Trust is the UK’s leading national educational charity connecting children from areas of high social and economic disadvantage with the land that sustains us all. Our farm, food and countryside-based programmes support children living in poverty, whom, through circumstance, are 13 times more likely to experience poor health and education outcomes than their affluent peers.
"The students were thrilled to breathe real, clean air and learn about farm life first-hand. They eagerly fed the animals and learned about the great importance of the earth. This visit has provided a unique and memorable connection to nature for our students. The warmth of the farmers and the simplicity of farm life left a lasting impression on everyone ." ~ Teacher, Farm Discovery visit
"I never knew that just being away from the city could feel so good...My favourite thing was the freedom to feel good and be me." ~ Pupil
There is a widespread lack of understanding, even a disbelief, of the day-to-day reality of the most disadvantaged people in our community. Poverty impacts access to good food, green space and opportunity, which in turn affects physical and mental health, the ability to access new experiences and the opportunity to thrive.
"This provided a wonderful experience for our pupils to visit a part of the world they would never get to see for themselves. Being able to see all the work happening behind the scenes to get food to our supermarkets has enabled them to view the big picture and where they fit into it." ~ Teacher
"When we were feeding the cows and having the picnic - we were in peace, and it’s so different to here (in the city) where it’s so loud." ~ Pupil
